Know Her Words

is a PEN International Women Writers Committee Initiative to celebrate the best women’s writing from around the world. Here we present the 10 best Bulgarian entries.

Literature, national though it be in origin, knows no frontiers, and should remain common currency between nations in spite of political or international upheavals.

Article 1 from The PEN Charter, ratified in 1921

Anything that makes for international understanding and peace is to the good.

That was the response by John Galsworthy, an English novelist and playwright, to a dinner invitation by the English writer Catharine Amy Dawson Scott at the Florence Restaurant in Soho, London, on 5 October 1921. PEN would be launched.
